Mental Struggle: Motivation; Li was excited because he saw Baryshnikov’s dance video, “my heart leapt with each one of his astonishing jumps and accelerating turns”. This motivated Li to do good in dancing, “I spent most of my time practising”. This boosts up Li’s confidence because Li wants to become and dance like Baryshnikov. Perseverance; Li’s end of year report marks improved, “Teacher Xiao gave me a “good” grade and even Gao gave me an “above average” and I knew there was still much more to do. This Boasts Li’s confidence because his marks were outstanding to him. Inner strength; Li’s improvements were major “Gao Dakun face showed utter disbelief”, Li’s confidence grew and grew. Li was very happy because he paid a surprise visit to my family, driven by the desire to know his students families better. Confidence; Li was feeling confidence because his teachers starting to notice him. When Li preformed in stage, the audience loved him, Li is a good dance, but he knows. “The audience could see a good dance from miles away” Pride; Li stole his friends toy, his mum was very angry and upset because he stole a toy. But when Li’s mum dragged him to his friends house to return the toy, the mother totally understand, “his too young to understand”. When Li returned home, his mother cried and hugged him and said “I’m so sorry we are too poor to buy you a toy car”. That night his dads started talking about pride and never lose it. - Li started to lose his self-esteem because the teacher started to call him names and Li admitted that his dancing standards are poor. “I know I haven’t been good at your classes and my dancing standard is poor”. He started to feel and unwanted by his teacher - Li was distracted because the food in the academy was very good compared at home were dried Yams. Other people in the academy cried as well (mainly girls). Another thing that overcame the home sickness if the mothers quilt she made for him, it reminds him of home and his family - Li described himself as a trapped bird because he doesn’t understand why he does maths and science because it has nothing to do with dancing. “I didn’t understand the importance of maths to a ballet dancer” - The cage is China, because it’s stopping him to do good and his love of dance - Li came to realise that “I can never go back” and “he would always love his parents”. He realised that he was luckily and he needs to go forward - He changed his opinion towards dancing and his love of his family - I t was hard for him, because he went to Beijing when he was very young, and he didn’t like dancing and his teacher at the start, but now he understand the meaning of dancing.

When you re-read this chapter keep in mind Li was only eleven years old when he went to Beijing. • How does Li overcome homesickness? • Li describes himself as being a ‘bird trapped in a cage’ (p130). Why? He has no freedom in the dance academy • What was his ‘cage’? The Beijing dance academy
Li’s visit home during Chapter Twelve (p168 onwards) results in a major turning point. He now realises that he has no future at home with his own family. ‘“Never forget where you come from,’ she said. ‘Work hard and make a life of your own. There is nothing here except starvation and struggle!”’ (p170) ‘I knew now, with sudden shock, that I could never go back to the life I used to have….I knew my future lay ahead, not behind.’ (p172) • What made Li come to this realization? His brothers were still in the commune and will never leave • What had changed for him? He is now part of this new ballet life • Why was this so difficult for him? He had to leave his family behind to help them in the future.
