I think that Li’s teacher pointed him out to go to the dance academy because of his devotion to chairman Mao. Li states that,” My [his] devotion to Moa and his ideology was greatly intensified.” In Li’s class you learn all about Moa and his revolution and during these classes Li was devoted to Mao’s teachings and his teacher may have noticed him. Li was picked by his teacher out of his whole class because he was dedicated to learning all about Mao and this got him noticed.
1. Why do you think his teacher might have pointed him out?
I think the teacher pointed out Li because Li maybe had the physique of a ballet dancer. Li said, “As we sang, the four representatives came down the aisles and selected a girl with big eyes, straight teeth and a pretty face”. If they were to choose a girl like that, and then chose Li, it must have meant that Li had the same good qualities as this girl. I believe Li got chosen for his stance and physique, not just luck as he believes.
1. Why do you think his teacher might have pointed him out? Li’s teacher may have pointed him out because of his abnormal toe structure. The teacher may have seen determination in Li therefore pointing him out. “Although Li was lucky to have 3 long toes, he was not necessarily a good dancer. This is because having longer toes in ballet is a benefit. Li was chosen because he had three long toes, giving an advantage in ballet.
The only thing I would add Brandon (aside from the proper spelling of Moa) would be a page number for your reference. Whilst page number's are not required in assessments they can help you when preparing for them as you can recall the reference and read around it for any required context or extra information etc.
1. I believe Teacher Song pointed Li out was because of his three long toes, which were considered to be lucky. Teacher Song said “Although Li was lucky to have three long toes he was not necessarily a natural dancer”, this is why teacher Song chose Li because his three long toes were considered an advantage.
Why do you think his teacher might have pointed him out?
I think Mao’s teacher pointed him out because he is such a talented dancer to the art. As he said “by the time they finished testing everyone, only one boy and one girl were selected to go on to the next level. I was that boy. I was exited but frightened” (P92)
refrase that sir , he was the only BOY left out of the 2, and he was chosen because he was a natural talented dance in some of the styles, such as ballet...
He got pointed out because he had the characteristics of being a good ballet and he was determined in everything he was doing even when he went through pain he did not give up. "But I was determined to be chosen."
The teacher might of picked Li out because of his long toes "Li was luckily to have three long toes" and another reason why because "more luck than skill" I believe Li was chosen instead of his other class mates because of his unbound feet, his spirit of communist and Mao, when the teachers entered the class he sang the Mao's song, we never know if he really stood out while singing (PAGE 90) that might of gave a idea to the teacher he is willing to serve communist under the influence of dancing.
Physical Struggle Why do you think his teacher might have pointed him out? I think that Li's teacher pointed him out because of the type of clothes he was wearing “There were eight other children already in the room when we arrived. We all wore our thick, quilted homemade coats and pants and looked like little round snowballs”.(pg.91) They probably picked him because of his peasant background, “Children whose families were associated with wealth and education anywhere in the past generations were disqualified”. (pg.94)
Whilst I agree with the opinion presented in that he was spirited and followed Mao you need to understand that the binding of feet was only done to FEMALES and as such Li would never have done this!

1. I believe Teacher Song pointed Li out was because of his determination to be chosen, and also was considered to more luck than skill. Li’s three long toes, which were considered to be lucky, might have been a contribution. Teacher Song said “Although Li was lucky to have three long toes he was not necessarily a natural dancer”, this is why teacher Song chose Li because his three long toes were considered an advantage. 2. I believe Li bore the pain and was determined because he had been lucky enough to be chosen to go to the Dance Academy and he didn’t want to let his parents, village and china down. “One teacher lifted one of my legs upwards, two others held my other leg steady and straight”, this shows us that even though Li was in pain he was determined to continue and bore the pain. 3. The other physical hardships ballet posed were the tight shoes, strengthening of arms and flexibility of the legs. The tight shoes cramped Li’s feet as we see in the novel “My feet felt so cramped I couldn’t imagine how bad it must be for the girls standing on their toes in pointe shoes”, the strengthening of the arms strained Li’s arms as we see in the novel “How could I possibly suffer this agony for six years?, and the flexibility of the legs put Li in excruciating pain as we see in the novel “Keep your knee straight! He pushed my knee down on the barre. Now I want you to bend your body forward and try to touch your toes with your head. Don’t get up until I tell you! The pain was excruciating.” 4. Li has been accustomed to physical hardship back in his village Qingdao where he was used to living on minimal food and was used to walking around the village. 5. Yes I believe this helped when it came to ballet, because he was used to a hard lifestyle in his village. Li also had a poor lifestyle back in his village, and when he came to the dance academy there was food to eat.
2. Why was he so determined? Li was so determined because he wanted to give his family hope and not let them down. He also believed in himself because he knows he has a chance that he has been pointed out. “But i was determined to be chosen, so i lifted my leg higher and higher.” Pg93. Li was determined to be chosen. Li was so determined because he wanted to be chosen to give hope to his family.
3. What other physical hardships did ballet pose? Other physical hardships that ballet pose were tearing of hamsprings and tight ballet shoes. “No, it doesn’t hurt, as they lifted my leg higher and higher. Be strong, be strong, you can bear the pain! I kept telling myself. I did bear the pain, but the hardest thing was pretending to walk normally afterwards. They had torn both my hamstrings”. pg93. Lis hamstrings were torn from his determination to ballet he pushed himself so that they know he is serious. The physical hardships of ballet are the pulling of hamstrings and tight ballet shoes.
Why was he so determined to be chosen? Li was so determined to be picked he even endured a hamstring injury to break out of his future in the communes. Ever since he watched ‘the red detachment of women’ li wanted to break out the commune life, “My [his] future lay in the commune fields as a labourer.”(pg 89) When the opportunity came up to leave this life and join Mao’s dance academy he had to tell himself “Be strong! Be strong! You can bear the pain”(pg93), over and over while his muscles were being torn. Li was so determined that he would do anything to get in. What other physical hardships did ballet pose? Other physical hardships ballet posed for Li include tight fitting shoes li must wear all the time during lessons, early morning jogs, cramped feet, difficult French ballet positions to remember and leg stretches. At the start of Li’s training he had to learn to lift his leg straight in a barre and when he couldn’t the teacher, “walked over to me and lifted my [Li’s] leg. I [Li] felt a tinge of pain in my hamstring and automatically bent my knee.”(pg124) Li found all these physical hardships in ballet difficult at first but over time became used to it. In what other ways had Li been accustomed to physical hardships? Li grew up in the communes this means he learned to live with a through life with plenty of hardships. In commune he had to live with eating yams mostly every day, wearing hand me down cloths, family always working and seeing his Niang and other family members in pain. Li has been through a lot and this has shown in his determination to do better. Do you think this helped in his ballet? Yes, I believe that this did help in his ballet because even though it was very hard to adapt to his new lifestyle he has done the best he can. Li has put so much effort into his dancing as it can lead to a better life.
1. Why do you think that his teacher might have pointed Li Cunxin out? I believe that teacher Song chose Li Cunxin out of the rest is because of his abnormal toes. “ Although Li was lucky to have three long toes as he was not necessarily a natural dancer”(Pg 97) Li was chose because teacher Song believed that his three abnormal toes would give him an advantage in balance 2. Why was he determined? I strongly believe that Li was determined to be selected so that he could make his family proud and not let his family name down. “ One teacher lifted one of my legs upwards, two others held my other leg steady and straight. They kept asking me if it hurt. It was excruciating! But I was determined to be chosen”( Pg 93) 3. What other physical hardships did ballet pose? Not only did ballet pose physical hardships, it also contained mental hardships aswell. The development of their arm strength, the uncomfort of their tight ballet shoes and the flexibility of legs are some assets that go towards learning ballet at an academy and becoming a professional dancer. “During that first ballet class I couldn’t feel my toes at all in the freezing-cold weather and those tight, tiny shoes”(Pg122) “ How could I possible suffer this agony for six years? My feet felt so cramped. I couldn’t imagine how bad it must be for the girls standing on their toes in pointe shoes”(Pg123) “Keep your knee straight! He pushed mu knee down on the barre. Now i want you to bend your body forward and try to touch your toes with your head. Dont get up until i tell you! The pain was excruciating”(Pg124) 4. In what other ways had Li been accustomed to physical hardship? Li Cunxin had been accustomed to physical hardship at the academy by training everyday and having secret night practices 5. Do you think this helped when it came to ballet? Yes, i believe that this was a big benefit during his stay in the academy as it helped his progress increase significantly
- The teacher might of picked Li out because of his long toes "Li was luckily to have three long toes" and another reason why because "more luck than skill" I believe Li was chosen instead of his other class mates because of his long toes, his spirit of communist and Mao, when the teachers entered the class he sang the Mao's song, we never know if he really stood out while singing (PAGE 90) that might of gave a idea to the teacher he is willing to serve communist under the influence of dancing
- Li was so determined about his torn hamstrings because he was afraid to lose his position in dancing. Li was strong "Be strong! Be strong you can bear the pain" he said to himself, "No, it doesn’t hurt" he told to the teacher. In my point of view, Li tried very hard in front of the teachers because after the training he pretend to walk normally, "the hardest think was pretending to walk normally afterwards"
- Other physical hardship Li faced in the new school he faced, the pain he couldn't bear in his new dancing shoes it was uncomfortable, stretching the legs and keeping the knee straight "my right les was in such pain that I had trouble even lifting it off the barra", Li trained 5 times a day in the studios "i thought i worked hard as a student" and the final physical hardship is not knowing how to communicate with his wife, Li's English was broken, "But it didn't work out the way we both had hoped, even though we loved and cared for each other" All these hardships that Li faced, he stood strong and faced reality - Li has been accustomed to physical hardship in a number of ways such as the failed marriage with Elizabeth, his poor English when he was in America and the loss of the citizenship which makes him Chinese. Li decided to stay in America which is a treat to communist China. China’s main communist ways are do not fall into the influence of the western world, and for Li to stay in America is a treat and betrayal. “i didn’t even know whether my defection had caused them further hardship in life, or difficulties for them with the Chinese Government”
- All Li’s hardship he faced he tried to fight. When Li done Ballet, all the treat was over to him. When Li done ballet, he was watched and supported by a lot of people. At the end of the story, all the hardship paid off, because at his final dance (in the book) his parents came to watch him in a surprise, and ballet helped him because he was banned to enter China, and he eventually visited his old village due to Ballet.
